TikTok Indonesia’s Election Safety Efforts
The 2024 general elections held on 14 February were a historic day for both Indonesia and TikTok Indonesia. With the participation of over 200 million voters, it was the largest one-day elections in the world as well as TikTok’s first elections in the country. Brightminds had the opportunity to support TikTok Indonesia in its preparation for the momentous event, which kicked off in 2023.
Since September 2023, Brightminds helped organize key announcements and stakeholder engagements related to the elections for TikTok Indonesia, including:

- Press conference announcing MoU signing with the General Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) on 18 September 2023. Held at Bawaslu head office, it officially kickstarted TikTok’s election safety efforts and amplified its commitment to safeguarding election integrity. Up to 41 journalists of 33 online and print media attended the event and 106 coverage were generated from press release distribution.

- An intimate media brunch on 16 October 2023 inviting 6 journalists from tier-1 publications, highlighting TikTok’s Community Partner Channel (CPC) initiative focuses on collaboration with independent and credible fact-checking partners in Indonesia. Up to 32 coverage was generated from press release distribution, including Detik.com, Tempo.co, and Media Indonesia.

- Media trip to TikTok Transparency and Accountability Center in Singapore on 1-2 November 2023 to showcase and increase awareness of the workings of TikTok’s algorithm and fact-checking process. Top-tier national publications such as Kompas Daily, The Jakarta Post, and Liputan6.com joined the trip, generating 9 coverage and an Instagram post from Liputan6.com.

- Press conference announcing MoU signing between TikTok Indonesia and KPU on 15 November 2023. Up to 22 news articles were published by the attending media and 11 coverage was generated from a photo release distribution.

- Media briefing held to introduce TikTok Indonesia Election Hub 2024 (Pusat Panduan Pemilu 2024) and #SalingJaga campaign held on 28 November 2023. It attracted 22 journalists from 20 online media and generated 53 coverage from press release and infographic distributions.

- Journalist workshop with Technology Journalists Forum (Forwat) on 1 December 2023 to raise awareness of the workings of TikTok’s algorithm and content moderation, election safety efforts, as well as safety measures available on the platform. Up to 42 journalists from 35 tech and general news media attended the workshop, and 52 coverage were generated from press release and infographic distributions.

- Brightminds supported TikTok’s digital PR approach through a partnership with three podcast platforms – Info A1 on Kumparan, Ruang 28 by Noice, and Kasisolusi by Close The Door – from December 2023 to January 2024 to better spread awareness of TikTok’s election safety efforts.

- On 30 January 2024, Brightminds supported TikTok Indonesia’s speaking opportunity at the UNDP Policy Dialogue in Jakarta. TikTok was invited as one of the five panelists who include representatives from the Ministry of Communications and Information, media, CSO, and academician.
TikTok Indonesia’s proactive efforts for the 2024 Indonesian elections were highlighted in two newsroom posts published on its website, also developed by Brightminds, on 29 December 2023 and 28 February 2024.
